Home to over 40 graduate departments, UCSD offers degrees in fields from
bioengineering to ethnic studies, physics to political science, biochemistry
to literature, neuroscience to visual arts, and beyond. A premier
institution for doctoral work, UCSD offers facilities, funding, and
educational opportunities that parallel the best institutions in the world.
Among the faculty are Nobel laureates, a Fields Medalist in mathematics,
recipients of the National Medal of Sciences, a Pulitzer Prize winner, and
many Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellows. On the cutting edge of research, the
UCSD faculty participate in numerous research groups and institutes on
campus. Members of organized research units, often spanning several academic
departments, carry out advanced research projects and provide outstanding
opportunities for graduate students. UCSD is affiliated with over 40
research centers, institutes, projects and natural reserves. Such resources
include: San Diego Supercomputer Center (one of two in the country),
California Space Institute, AIDS Research Institute, Institute of Geophysics
and Planetary Physics, Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation,
Laboratory of Comparative Human Cognition, Center for Research in Computing
and the Arts, Center for Magnetic Recording Research, Center for US-Mexican
Studies, and the Scripps Coastal Reserve.
The serene setting of the UCSD campus, with its eucalyptus groves and
spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, strikes a perfect balance with the
academic atmosphere. Located in La Jolla, just 12 miles from downtown San
Diego, UCSD offers top-notch facilities, multitudes of campus events, and
recreation options. UCSD provides housing for approximately one third of the
graduate students and their families on or near campus. The Early Childhood
Education Center provides day care, after school care, and kindergarten
classes for children of students, faculty, and staff. |
